We understand that traffic congestion outside schools in the morning and afternoon peak times is very frustrating. The increased traffic and drivers who park illegally can put students at risk. Illegal parking outside the school gate can also result in a vehicle infringement and fine. Parking rules are in place to help protect children and keep them safe.

Tips for school drop off and pick up

School drop off and pick up times can be busy. This video that highlights some unsafe behaviours that can occur around school gates and shows how small changes can make a big difference to help keep students, whānau and school communities safe.

To make school zones safer, remember to:

  • avoid parking on yellow lines, across driveways or stopping in the middle of the road
  • make sure students cross the road safely
  • be kind to parking officers.

School-led initiatives

Through the Travelwise school programme, Auckland Transport offer various initiatives for schools in Tāmaki Makaurau that can help with school congestion. However, it’s up to all of us to create long term behaviour change that improves safety for all road users.

Safety at the School Gate

This initiative aims to support a safer environment for students, parents and whānau and school staff traveling to and from school. It provides dedicated parking enforcement that occurs randomly during the school term.

Park and Walk

Before and after school is a busy time. Parking at least 400m away from school and walking to the gates can reduce the risk of crashes and injuries.
