Safe speeds in town centres Safe speeds in town centres
Town centres are busy, with lots of people sharing the road including school children, shoppers and people using different transport options – all in close proximity to cars.
Two out of three serious injuries are happening to people outside of vehicles. In 2020 vulnerable road users (those outside of vehicles) represented 57% of deaths on Auckland’s roads.
30km/h is the internationally accepted speed to greatly reduce the chances of people walking or cycling from being killed or seriously injured.
AT is improving safety for all road users in town centres with a mixture of safety initiatives including raised pedestrian crossings, raised tables, kerb alterations, targeted speed / safety signage and road markings.
