Mt Roskill - Safer Communities Phase Two Mt Roskill - Safer Communities Phase Two
Proposal status: Feedback closed 19 September 2021
Reference number: SC2021-001
Due to health and safety restrictions at Alert Level 4, the scheduled Mt Roskill Safer Communities consultation drop-ins sessions were held online.
We're proposing improvements in your area
We have been working alongside the community in Mt Roskill as you have asked us to improve accessibility and safety for pedestrians at two key intersections on Mt Albert Road.
We are now proposing some improvements on Mt Albert Road, at the intersection of Frost Road and at Hayr Road and Dornwell Road, by the Countdown supermarket in Three Kings Plaza.

In these locations, we are proposing to:
- Install traffic lights and pedestrian controlled crossings on all three legs of the intersection.
- Install new sections of footpath at the crossings and connecting to the nearby bus stops, including tactile pavers to help guide people with low vision to the correct place to cross the road.
- Paint new road markings to support the changes at the intersection.
- Relocate the bus stop from #496 to #500 Mt Albert Rd.
- Relocate the bus stop from #471 to #473 Mt Albert Rd.
- Remove the existing crossing point at #473 Mt Albert Rd.
- Paint new sections of cycle lanes and advance stop boxes for cyclists to safely wait at the front of the traffic queue for the lights to change.

Mt Albert and Hayr / Dornwell Road:
- Install traffic lights and pedestrian controlled crossings on all four legs of the intersection.
- Reshape the kerbs at the entrance to Hayr and Dornwell Road to create “entrance only” access for vehicles. There will be no vehicle access from Hayr and Dornwell Roads into Mt Albert Road.
- Reshape the driveway entrances into Three Kings Plaza to align with the traffic lights and make space for a new bus stop.
- Install new sections of grass verge and footpath, including tactile pavers, at the crossings and connecting to the nearby bus stops, crossing and Three Kings Plaza.
- Paint new road markings to support the changes at the intersection.
- Paint new advance stop boxes where cyclists can wait for the lights to change, at the front of the traffic queue.
- Relocate the bus stop and shelter from #522 Mt Albert Rd to the east of the intersection in front of the car park entrance.
- Install a new bus stop and bus shelter outside #499 Mt Albert Rd. This will remove three on-street car parking spaces.
- Remove the existing crossing point at #501 Mt Albert Rd.

Between Hayr / Dornwell Road and Mt Eden Road:
- Upgrade the existing crossing at #511 Mt Albert Rd to a zebra crossing on a raised table level with the footpath, including side and centre islands and a gentle exit slope that is easy on buses.
- Install new signs and paint new road markings to support the new crossing.
- Relocate the bus stop and shelter from #515 to #533 Mt Albert Rd, so it is closer to the intersection. This will return three car parking spaces on the south side of the street.

Our surveys show there are high numbers of people, including many school children, walking in these two areas. These intersection changes, developed with the help of the community, aim to improve safety for pedestrians. In particular, by reducing the amount of traffic using the Hayr and Dornwell Road intersection, we hope to create a more desirable environment for people who live in Mt Roskill to walk and cycle to the local shops.

Mt Roskill: Safe with us
Auckland Transport cares for your safety. We want to make our roads safe for everyone, people walking and cycling, especially for our kids and senior citizens and people driving. Projects like this one around Mt Albert Road are another step towards our goal of achieving no deaths or serious injuries on our roads. We are guided by the Vision Zero approach to transport safety, which prioritises human safety over other measures (like minor time saving).
